Menlo Park Chorus

Spring Quarter 2011

Welcome to the MP Chorus! We are a friendly group committed to learning and performing music for the community.

Meeting Day/Time: Tuesday evenings, 7:15 to 9:45PM

¨        (Due to construction, the Chorus temporarily rehearses at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 2650 Sand Hill Rd., Menlo Park.  In March, we may use another interim location.  Eventually we will return to Burgess Recreation Center, 701 Laurel Street, Menlo Park.)

Fees: Please pay by the third session of the term.

¨        Class Registration: $86 for Menlo Park residents, otherwise $115; Register at the City’s new Burgess gym.  Write a check to “City of Menlo Park” or pay by credit card.  Even easier: register online at www.menlopark.org

¨        Materials/Pianist fee: $50; Check (make out to MP Chorus) or cash; give to Loretta

Schedule: Spring rehearsals, Tuesdays through April.  (NO rehearsals 3/8 & 4/19)

Dress rehearsal: April 26.  Performance: April 29.

Concert: Friday, April 29, 2011 at 7:30 PM.  Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 300 Ravenswood

                Ave., Menlo Park.

¨        Concert attire: Men wear black or dark suits and black shoes; women are usually all in black, including long skirts or pants, black hose, black shoes (no open toes); no sleeveless tops or flashy jewelry

Music: Our music is distributed to you in a black binder. If you take a binder home, please return it if you will not continue with the chorus.

Voice Placement: New members take a brief audition to match pitch and check vocal range for placement in a section. Auditions last about five minutes, are very "user-friendly," and consist of:

¨        Vocalizing (singing scale passages, or similar) with piano support to determine range.

¨        Pitch memory exercises (we'll play a sequence on the piano, and you sing it back).

¨        30 seconds to a minute of a prepared song. This can be anything that you enjoy singing: art song, aria, musical theatre, jazz tune, hymn, children's song or the first verse of the anthem, "My Country 'tis of Thee", Amazing Grace, Edelweiss, etc

General Expectations

¨        Notify us of absences.  Use the non-attendance sheet or email Loretta lorettafaulkner@gmail.com

¨        No talking during class except to ask questions of April or John

¨        Make every effort to attend regularly and do extra practice at home, if needed

¨        MP Chorus normally holds two performances a year, one in spring and one late in fall quarter (holiday music). Please check each concert date to make sure you can participate.

¨        Snacks are brought on a volunteer basis to each rehearsal for our 8:30 break. You may participate if you like, but there is no obligation to do so.
